I just heard of Wayne’s passing and was so sorry to hear of this. At one time in my high school life he was probably the best friend I had in the world. He was really a great guy. He moved up to Warrensburg after college and I moved south and we stayed in touch for a while, but I have not talked to him for many years and I really regret that we didn’t keep up with each other. His life needs to be celebrated. I knew Wayne starting at Craig Elementary School in Schenectady. In Junior High and High School, we were really good friends. I have incredibly fond memories of those years. We played golf every summer together at the Edison Club. We played on all kinds of sports teams together. The Barber’s house was always a fun hangout for young people. He had two really pretty sisters so there were always young girls and guys around the Barber house, and he had the two coolest parents there ever were and they wanted young people around. Mr. Barber would show us his “new” golf swing in the living room and he would go out and play basketball with us in the driveway and Mrs. Barber, who was a lovely lady, would sometimes put on music and get him to jitterbug with her. There was always fun things to do at the Barber house. I just loved going over there.

For those that don’t realize it, Wayne was an incredible athlete. He was one of the main players on the Niskayuna HS basketball team that won the NY State Sectionals in 1961. Wayne was never afraid to shoot, and one game he scored 30 points. He was good. We were on the soccer team together and he was a 3 year starter and he was not afraid to play rugged in those games. But golf was his best game. He was 2nd in the Schenectady County Amateur tourney as a high school player. He hit the ball so well. He was so good at golf that we often would start a round at 7 PM and play the last 3 holes in the dark because he was so accurate, he always knew where the ball would land, even in the dark. At the Edison Club in those wonderful summers so long ago, we would play 36 holes every day, then go swimming, then go back to the school and play Babe Ruth baseball at night, usually running across the field late for the game, putting our uniforms on as we ran and laughing all the way. He was fun to be with.

He was very popular and well liked in high school, but he didn’t date much. But then along came Lynn, and he fell like a ton of bricks. He was in love with her the first time he saw her. And he was crazy about her parents too. The fact that the marriage lasted 50 years shows he made the right choice. He looked good in the picture I saw so she must have taken good care of him. I am so sorry of his passing. I so regret I didn’t keep up with him in later years, but I have nothing but wonderful memories from my youth of being his friend and a friend of all the Barbers. He was a truly great guy from a wonderful loving family. He would do anything for you. Everyone liked him. I am proud to have called him my friend and I will miss him a lot. Bill Bowman, Birmingham, AL-- NHS Class of ’61.
