Obituary of Helen W. Hutchins

North Creek: Helen Waddell Hutchins, 95, of Bird Pond Road, passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 12, 2016 at her home. Born October 3, 1920 on Waddell Road in Wevertown, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Sarah (Stackhouse) Waddell. Helen graduated from North Creek High School in 1937 at the age of 16. She furthered her education, obtaining her Registered Nursing Degree in 1943 from the Memorial Hospital School of Nursing, where she worked for 2 years She married Milton Hutchins on October 27, 1945 in Wevertown. The couple raised four children and spent 23 years together before his untimely passing in 1968. Helen was employed as a private duty nurse and assisted on ambulance calls early in her career. She later worked for several Adirondack doctors, including Dr. Grunblatt, Dr. Foote, and Dr. Holt. Eventually she became school nurse at Johnsburg Central School, retiring from there in the early 1990’s. A quietly faithful servant, Helen was a lifelong member of the Wevertown United Methodist Church (later combined with Riparius and Johnsburg to form RWJ United Methodist Church), serving as church treasurer for over 50 years. In addition she was active in organizing and preparing delicious Election Day dinners enjoyed by many in the local community. Her loving and thoughtful care touched so many. In addition to her parents and late husband, Helen was predeceased by her brother James Edward Waddell and sister Willa Waddell King, with whom she spent many days traveling and sharing memories of their younger years. She is survived by four children, James Hutchins and his wife, Carolyn, of North Creek, Susan Allison and her husband, Sam, of North Creek, Mary Jane Hanson and her husband, Richard, of Springfield Center, and Thomas Hutchins and his wife, Christy, of Moreau; grandchildren, Reid (Jennifer) Hutchins, Michael (Craig Sheil) Hanson, Ellen Hanson, Elizabeth and Paul Allison, and Sarah and Melissa Hutchins; two great-grandchildren, Piper and Iver Hutchins. She also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, extended family members and friends. Friends may call on Helen’s family from noon to 2 p.m., Saturday, May 21, 2016 at the RWJ United Methodist Church, South Johnsburg Road, Johnsburg. A memorial service will immediately follow the visitation at 2 p.m., at the church with Rev. Arnold Stevens officiating. Burial will be conducted privately at Bates Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations in Helen’s name to the RWJ United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 98, Johnsburg, 12843.
