Harold “Spike” Kunz, age 78, loving husband of Dodie Kunz died peacefully in his home on January 5th after a brief illness.
He is survived by his wife, his son Greg and his wife Christina Travis of Clifton Park, NY and his daughter Beth and her husband David Flaten of Ithaca, NY; and his beloved grandchildren Jordan (Colin) Brown, Jacob Kunz, and Brittney Flaten and his brother Eric (Sigrid) Kunz and his nephew Stephen (Sondra) Kunz.
Spike was born in Glen Ridge, NJ the son of Harold George Kunz, Sr. and Isabelle Kunz. Spike graduated from Montclair High School in 1957 and attended Cornell University, graduating in 1961. Spike went on to study at Cornell University’s Medical College in New York City. He graduated in 1965 and began his surgical internship and residency at New York Hospital. Spike served as a Captain in the United States Air Force stationed at the USAF Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado from July 1967 to June 1969. During his time in the Air Force, Spike was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes and was honorably discharged. After leaving the Air Force, he began a radiology residency at the Mallinckrodt Institute of Radiology, Washington University in St. Louis, MO. After completing his residency, Spike joined the Scott Radiological Group in St. Louis, MO where he practiced for seven years. In 1979, Spike and Dodie along with their children returned to the East Coast, settling in Delmar, NY and working with the New Scotland Radiological Group at St. Peters Hospital until 1985. For the last eight years of his career, Spike worked with the Medical Imaging Group of Lehigh Valley in Allentown, PA. Spike retired in 1994 at the age of 55.
It was in 1979 that Spike and Dodie discovered Lake George where they have had a home since 1980, living there permanently since 1994. Lake George and all it has to offer brought much joy to Spike and Dodie. A longtime member of the Lake George Club, Spike was an avid sailor. During the winters, Spike could be found at Gore Mountain skiing with his children, grandchildren, and friends.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the American Diabetes Association or Planned Parenthood. A memorial service will be held in the Spring of 2018.
