Lake George: James Arthur Robert Smith, 76, of Pine Tree Lane, passed away peacefully, Saturday, December 17, 2016 at the Warren Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation following a courageous battle with Alzheimer’s disease. Born June 25, 1940 in Toronto, Canada, he was the son of the late James and Vera (Mulholland) Smith. Upon his high school graduation, he began his employment with Canadian National Railway, giving him the opportunity to move to New York, eventually taking a job with New York Central, Conrail, and CSX railways. Bob was a longtime hockey referee, known as “Smitty” to all the players and coaches along the east coast. He is survived by the love of his life, Doris Hopper of Lake George, his children, Doug Smith of Kingston, ON, and Debbie Butler and her husband, Rick of Troy; his brother, Billy Smith of Montreal, CA; as well as several grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. At Bob’s request, there are no calling hours or funeral services scheduled. A private graveside service will be conducted at a later time in Mount Hermon Cemetery, Quebec City. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to a charity of one’s choice. Please visit www.alexanderfh.net for online guest book and condolences.
