What is life but a chance to disrupt, move, and exert energy? Each life in a way is like a storm. Our energy is finite, our purpose is fluid and our impacts may vary. Some storms are just passing; their presence cannot be distinguished from their absence, and their wake cannot be distinguished from their heart or their eye. Other storms are all-encompassing, altering all things that lay in their paths. Special storms may even seem unrelenting, but eventually, all of our winds calm and the last of our rains fall.
If the last of your rains have fallen, your storm is still not past. The storm is not over until all the ripples we have caused have settled and all those things we propelled have come to rest.
You did too much. You did everything anyone ever asked you and even more than anyone could have had the gall to ask of you. You not only established roots in a community you grew up in, but you became the roots, entrenching yourself in the lives of all those who found themselves planted in the place you made a home.
The power of a quality educator is compounding and your impact should not be understated. You taught a public high school course like a 200 or 300 level college seminar. You took students out of state, or even country for the first time, and gave many of them opportunities that they wouldn’t have had but for your presence. All that while always taking an amount of pride in the products produced that was only matched by your genuine interest in them.
And if you in fact pass, you will surely leave a void in the lives of your husband, and children, and sadden those who had the pleasure of coming in contact with you, but those who will lose the most are those who never got a chance to know you at all. They will be benefited only by their heedless ignorance as to what once was, as your position(s) will be filled, but you will not be replaced. A landscape will remain in the place of the community we have all come to know, but it will not be the one that you supported, as even the hardiest timber will fall without its roots.
And if this is the last of the storm, your wake will be felt for many more moons. Your rain was always heavy and your winds robust. And a title wave does not stop until long after the ocean is last rocked.
While time will pass and the tides will settle, your impact will ripple on until all those who you have touched also fade. Your wind may not fill another set of sails but all that it moved will always be moved, existing in a state irreconcilable from that where it never stormed.
I hope that this is only the eye, but If it’s the last gusts of the storm, then thank you for the push.

Matt, Cassondra and Christian, Pam and I tried numerous times to stop in and pay our respects but each time the line was longer. We are truly sorry that we were unable to wait in line, but with Pam's asthma and other ailments, she just could not stand in the rain for as long as the line would have taken. But know this...that line was really and truly a testament to how many lives Io touched! She was a wonderful wife, a fantastic mom and a dedicated teacher. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all and if you need a shoulder to lean on, please know we are here, God Bless You all, Paul and Pam

My sincerest sympathies to the Bruce family. I only know Io from having taught a distance learning class that followed her AP class. I often traveled to Warrensburg from Glens Falls to meet my distance learning students. They often remarked how lucky they were to have her as their teacher. When The Lake George Chronicle paper had the Student Athlete section where students from several local high schools mentioned their favorite teacher, Io was frequently mentioned because of her dedication and talent as a teacher. I can only imagine how much she will be missed by so many. May her memory be eternal.

Io and I taught Global and US History for the last 3 summers through Distance Learning. She was my kind of geek- a lifelong learner who shared her life and family with me and our students. She pronounced the Greek and Scandinavian things and made me pronounce the Russian. We enjoyed working together and I am guilty of requesting a complete rework of my school's schedule so that we could have Io. Every summer we would share how our school year was and what we looked forward to for the following year. I will never watch the Perseid meteor showers without thinking that I need to remind Io of the dates of it this year. (23 July-20 August) I am honored to have called you my friend and we are all diminished in your absence. I will honor your memory by embracing my role and teaching my heart out. May your memory be as a blessing to your family.
