Obituary of Elfriede Nelson

North Creek: Elfriede “Elfie” Nelson, 90, formerly of Ithaca, and more recently of Hudson Falls, went to be with the Lord on Monday, March 17, 2014, at Glens Falls Hospital. Born December 1, 1923 in Frankfurt, Germany, she was the daughter of the late Albert and Friedel (Ebel) Hauk. Elfriede spent her youth in Heidelberg, where she met an American soldier at the tail end of WWII. She then traveled to Africa, spending 21 months there before relocating to the United States in 1953. Elfie’s marriage to her first husband ended in divorce, however she later met and married her soulmate, Byron V. Nelson of Ithaca, who she wed in 1977; he passed away in 1993 after 16 years together. She was a seamstress for many years, before becoming the Food Service manager at SUNY Cortland, where she retired from after 20 years of dedicated employment. Upon retirement, at the age of 70, she returned to work, caring for Mr. and Mrs. Lee of Cayuga Heights for eight years. At the ripe ole age of 82, Elfie moved to be closer to her daughter in 2007. She had a wonderful relationship with the Lord and found the strength to carry her through all the trouble areas in her life. She is survived by her daughter, Renate Flynn (Sandy) of North Creek; three granddaughters, Lynnsey Flynn (George), Nikki Flynn, all of Dryden, and Meaghan Flynn of Chestertown; a great-granddaughter, who she deeply cherished, Hadleigh Marie Flynn. She also leaves behind several extended family members and many dear friends, including Sylvia Regrut of Ithaca, and everyone at the Hudson Falls Senior Center. At Elfie’s request there will be no calling hours scheduled. A Celebration of Life will be conducted at 1 pm, Saturday, March 29, 2014 at Bethel Grove Bible Church, 1763 Slaterville Rd, Ithaca, NY 14850 with Pastor David Jones, officiating. Elfriede's family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to High Peaks Hospice, the staff on Tower 2 at Glens Falls Hospital, and to her special caregiver, Vickie for all the exceptional care she received in the final chapter of her life.
