ATHOL: Ernest W. Smith, 91 years old, passed away peacefully on July 3, 2024 at Haynes House of Hope in Granville, NY.
Ernie was born on June 30, 1933, to the late Caleb and Lexie (Frasier) Smith in Brant Lake, NY. He enlisted in the United States Army from 1953 to 1955, serving as a truck driver in the Motor Pool in Berlin, Germany. Upon returning home, Ernie met the love of his life, Karma Baker, at a dance. They were married in the Bolton Landing Methodist Church on October 5, 1955.
Ernie spent his career working with in various stages of tree processing, whether it was logging for many of the local companies in the area or at Warrensburg Board and Paper where he spent more than 20 years.
When he wasn't working in the woods, he dedicated over 40 years to serving as a volunteer fireman with the Thurman Department. Additionally, Ernie drove the ambulance for the Thurman Rescue Squad. He found much joy in hit-and-miss engines and was a member of all the local engine clubs.
Besides his parents, Ernie is predeceased by brothers George, Francis and Robert Smith; sisters Isadora Persons, Nelly Brown, Margaret French and Mary Joe Smith.
Left to cherish Ernie’s memory is his beloved wife of 68 years, Karma (Baker) Smith; son Daniel (Lorrie) Smith; daughter Darcy Ford; grandson Jarred (Nicole) Smith; granddaughter Jessica (Jason) LaPoint; four beautiful great grandchildren along with two step great grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, July 9, 2024 at 11am in Warrensburg Cemetery, Hudson St., Warrensburg, NY.
