Obituary of Terry Scherer

STONY CREEK: Terry J. Scherer, 70 years young, of Stony Creek, NY, passed away unexpectedly at his beloved home on March 1, 2024.

Terry was born on June 29, 1953, to the late Henry and June (Wilcox) Scherer. He attended Warrensburg Central School, where his talents shone in sports, culminating in his graduation in 1971. Terry's journey into the workforce began immediately after high school, joining Jack Toney at Jacob and Toney’s Meat Store, a job he also held during his high school years. He briefly explored opportunities at P&C grocery store and other establishments as a meat manager before finding his way back to Jacob & Toney’s in the late 1970s. Later, Terry embarked on a new venture, co-founding Hometown Oil with his brothers Hans and Beaver and Jack Toney, where he remained dedicated until his passing.

In his leisure time, Terry indulged in his passion for hunting, relishing moments spent on his own land or venturing to Kansas annually alongside his cherished friend, Colin.  A devout fan of the Miami Dolphins and St. Louis Cardinals, he eagerly awaited each season to cheer for his beloved teams. An avid reader, Terry sought refuge in books and embraced the outdoors, often accompanied by a cup of coffee and a splash of bourbon. Protective of his meticulously maintained lawn, he guarded his prized lawn mower zealously. However, Terry's most cherished moments were spent with family, friends and especially his grandchildren.

Terry is preceded in death by his beloved Judy (Farrell) Scherer and Cy Combs who was like a son.

Left to cherish the memory of Terry are his daughters Carly (Scott) Remington and Megan Scherer; grandchildren Caleb and Cameron Remington and Avery and Macey Lanfear; partner of 13 years Amy Combs-Baker and her children Kendal Baker and Gage Baker III; brothers Hans (Barbara) Scherer, Kevin Scherer and Beaver (Judy) Scherer; sisters Cherie Roseway and Kelley (Brian) Keith; family dog Sitka; mentor and special friend Jack Toney and best friends Colin Hagadorn, John Yard, Mike Boyle, Joe McCue and Mark Harris.

Friends are invited to pay their respects and offer condolences to Terry’s family during the visitation hours from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm on Monday, March 11, 2024, at Alexander Funeral Home, located at 3809 Main Street, Warrensburg.

A Celebration of Life will be held later in the year.
