Rick Demarsh was perhaps one of the men that I feared the most as young man. I know that sounds strange because Rick was not a big, physically intimidating guy. In fact, he was a warm, enigmatic man who was quick to laugh at joke and was always supportive and encouraging. He was a man whose respect you had to earn and would do anything to keep. He was one of the few men that I looked to as a role model because of how much he loved the people around him and how much others loved him.
So, I think what I feared about Rick was that I would do something stupid or impetuous that would disappoint him, thus losing his respect. Thankfully, I am pretty sure I never did. But, there were definitely some close calls...Today, when I work with youth, I remember that the key to earning their respect is to show them the same kind of respect that Rick showed that younger me (and all of us who hung around his house in those days).
My heart goes out to Dan, Gail, Shelly and all of his family. Please know that we are here for you in your time of need.
