Obituary of Walter J. Howell

Stony Creek: Walter “Red” Howell, 81 of Kickapoo Mesa, passed away peacefully, Wednesday, February 8, 2006 his home with his beloved wife and daughter by his side. Born August 4, 1924 in Brooklyn, he was the son of the late William and Marie (Eiffer) Howell. Red married Dorothy Drexhagen in 1953. The couple resided and raised their family on Long Island. He was president of the Fresh Water Anglers of Long Island in 1965 and again in 1976 and taught fly tying at BOCES. His love of the Adirondacks and family vacations on Trout Lake lead to he and his wife retiring to Stony Creek in 1991. Red was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying bird hunting and fishing. He was an accomplished woodcrafter who could build most anything, his boats and furniture were but a few to mention. He was a communicant of St. Patrick’s RC Church in Glen Cove and locally at St. Cecilia’s RC Church in Warrensburg. Besides his parents, his sister, Helen Howell also died before him. He leaves behind his wife of 52 years, Dorothy Howell of Stony Creek; his daughter, Judy Howell of Amsterdam; his son, Russell Howell and his wife, Judith of Naples, FL; one granddaughter, Kaitlin Howell of Naples, FL. Friends may call on Red’s family from 10 am – 12 pm Friday at the Alexander-Baker Funeral Home, 3809 Main St., Warrensburg. A funeral mass will be celebrated at 12 pm Friday following the funeral home visitation at St. Cecilia’s RC Church, Main St., Warrensburg with Fr. Paul Cox officiating. Spring burial will take place in Knowelhurst Cemetery, Stony Creek.
