Obituary of Joann Slater
Please share a memory of Joann to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Warrensburg:
Joann Slater, 65, of Wing House in Fort Edward, passed peacefully into Heaven Sunday, March 6, 2016, at Albany Medical Center, surrounded by the love of family and friends.
Born April 23, 1950 in Glens Falls, she was the daughter of the late Carson and Hilda (Green) Slater.
Joann was the epitome of a happy life well lived and she filled the world with sunshine every minute of it. Endowed with a "little" bit of a stubborn streak, Jo generally had a smile on her face and made friends where ever she went. Some of Jo's many enjoyments were crafting, puzzles, puppies, babies, and outings with family and friends; she never left Olive Garden without a dessert to go and a stop at Dollar General for Diet Pepsi and chocolates. She was very proud of her 45 years of employment at CWI, many years of participation with the Special Olympics, and most recently, Expressions day program. She loved her friends and extended family at Wing House and had many years of happy memories there.
Jo’s family fondly remembers her for her pokiness, and the manner in which she developed many male crushes through the years. She never failed to light up in the presence of the men in her life, seemingly ignoring the women; she knew a good looking guy when she saw one and if you were male and nice to her you made her world a very happy place. Jo’s latest love was Rick Rodriguez, who spent many hours with her both in person and on the phone.
In addition to her parents, Jo was predeceased by her brother and favorite sibling, "Gig" Slater, two sisters, Linda Moulton and Gina M. Combs, nephew, Sean C. Moulton, and step-father, George S. Combs.
She is survived by her sisters, Kathy Haskell and her husband, John, of Thurman, and Crystal Vaisey and her husband, Wendell, of Warrensburg; sisters-in-law, Marie Allison and Joelene “Darlene” Slater; brother-in-law, Henry Moulton; and several nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Friends may call on Joann’s family from 4 to 6 pm, Thursday, March 10, 2016 at Alexander Funeral Home, Inc., 3809 Main St., Warrensburg.
A funeral service to celebrate her beautiful life will immediately follow the visitation at 6 pm, at the funeral home, with James Baker officiating.
Burial will take place at 11:00 am, Tuesday, April 19, 2016 in Warrensburg Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations in Joann’s memory to the WWARC, Wing House, 436 Quaker Road, Queensbury, NY 12804.
Jo’s family would like to offer a heartfelt thank you to the staff and friends at Wing House, the folks at CWI, Dr. Fuller, Dr. Yarze, and the wonderful staff at Albany Med., Dr. Dailey and his staff went above and beyond to make her last hours peaceful, comfortable, and surrounded by love.
“We will miss you forever Jo. Until we meet again… The dogs will be fed, we'll have pork chops for supper, and all of your "buds" will be fine.”
