Obituary of Vernon John Johnson

Lake George:
Vernon “John” Johnson, Jr., 84, of Truesdale Hill Rd., went to be with the Lord Saturday, November 19, 2016 at Glens Falls Hospital.
Born September 22, 1932 in Adirondack, he was the son of the late Vernon Sr. and Florence (Fish) Johnson; he was the oldest of four boys.
As a boy, John attended a one room school house in Adirondack before transferring to Pottersville Central School in sixth grade. Following his graduation in 1949, he went on to Cobleskill Agriculture College for a year.
John worked many odd jobs prior to being drafted into the United States Army in November of 1952. He completed basic training at Fort Bliss in El Paso, Texas, then went to missile school where he later became an instructor and did maintenance on Nike missiles. He was relocated to Fort Lewis in Washington to set up a missile base before his discharge in 1954.
John married Eyvonne Ackley on February 27, 1956.
Following his military service, John, briefly worked at a sawmill and cut logs for seven years. He then became employed by the NYS DOT in March of 1962, working as a laborer, promoted to Sign Foreman, to Highway Light Foreman, and lastly Highway Heavy Maintenance Foreman; holding that position until retiring in 1994 at the age of 62.
Besides his parents, John was predeceased by his beloved wife, Eyvonne, a brother, Robert Johnson and his wife, Andree.
He is survived by three daughters, Joann Dick, Shari Johnson and her husband, Robert Peck, and Jonna Converse and her husband, Brian, all of Warrensburg; seven grandchildren, Joe (Ricki) Dick, Randylee (Samantha Dingman) and Kayla (Glen Germain) VanDerwarker, Kendall (Adreona Duell) and Jerico Converse, and Mackenzie and Duncan Blydenburgh; six great-grandchildren, Jo Jo, Harley, Jayden, and Jacob Dick, and Austin and Nicholas Washburn, and one expected to arrive in January, Leo Brian Wyatt; two brothers, Charles (Mary), and Richard (Eleanor); sister-in-laws. Chrissy Ackley and Rita Ackley and brother-in-law, George Sprague, Jr.. He also leaves behind several nieces, nephews, cousins, close friends and a special niece, Lori Combs.
Friends may call on John’s family from 5 to 8 pm, Tuesday, November 22, 2016 at Alexander Funeral Home, 3809 Main Street, Warrensburg.
A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 am, Wednesday at the funeral home with Sister Linda Hogan, Parish Life Director of St. Cecilia’s Roman Catholic Church, officiating.
Burial will follow in North Caldwell Cemetery, Lake George.
In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
Pall Bearers will be his grandson’s, Joe, Randylee, Kendall, Jerico, Mackenzie and Duncan.
