Obituary of Stephen H. MacNeill

Athol: Stephen H. MacNeill, 90, of Athol Road, passed away peacefully, Sunday, November 26, 2017 at the Glens Falls Hospital following a brief illness with his loving family by his side. Born July 14, 1927 in Chestertown, he was the son of the late Quincy and Irma (Swan) MacNeill. Following his graduation from Chestertown High School, Stephen honorably served his country in the Navy during World War II. He married Yvonne Miller on August 7, 1949 and enjoyed 66 blissful years together until her passing on August 25, 2015. Stephen worked as a lineman for Niagara Mohawk for 38 years until his retirement in 1985. He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed tending to his garden, but above all, he enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren, as well as half of the children in the neighborhood, who affectionately called him “Pops” and “Gramps.” He was a lifelong member of the National Rifleman’s Association and an active 4H leader. He thoroughly enjoyed woodworking and many of his designs are still in use today. Besides his parents and beloved wife, he is predeceased by two sons, Frank and Craig MacNeill; as well as one brother and sister. He is survived by his daughter, Stephanie Gossen, and her husband, Kenny, of Athol; two grandsons, Jeremy Gossen of Texas and Jason Gossen and his wife, Tasha, of Arizona; two great-grandchildren, Halie and Jason, Jr.; a god-daughter, Clara Vasak; as well as several nieces and nephews. Friends may call on Stephen’s family from 11 am to 1 pm, Friday, December 1, 2017 at the Alexander Funeral Home, 3809 Main St., Warrensburg. A funeral service to celebrate his life will immediately follow the visitation at 1 pm, at the funeral home. Burial will follow in Cameron Cemetery, Cameron Rd., Athol.
