Robert “Bob” A. Knowles, 85, of Warrensburg passed away peacefully at his home on Tuesday, September, 18, 2018.
Born December, 19, 1932 in Quincy, MA, to the late Philip E. and Mildred (Weers) Knowles. He was raised in Plymouth, NH and graduated from Plymouth Teachers College. While there, he met his beloved wife, Peggy Manary of Portsmouth, NH. They were married two months shy of 63 years.
Bob began his career teaching Social Studies in 1955 at Exeter Junior High School. A former football player, he helped coach the varsity football team. Moving to Scotia, NY in 1963, Bob taught at Burnt Hills Ballston Lake Jr. High School for 27 years. While there, his accomplishments included: “Teacher of the Year”, Social Studies Dept. Chair and President of the Teacher’s Assoc. Retiring in 1990, he continued to be involved in the community. He was a volunteer fireman and Fire Commissioner at Glenville Hill Fire Dept.
In 2006 Peggy and Bob moved to Warrensburg, where he continued his community work as a member of the Historical Society and guide at Warrensburgh Museum. He was also a member of Warrensburgh Beautification Inc.
Bob shared his love of the outdoors with his family and taught Peggy and his family how to ski, traveling to Hickory Ski Center every weekend. He was also president and board member. They camped and hiked every summer, with the latest camping adventure being two weeks ago.
His passion for reading history complimented his passion for teaching. Bob loved his gardens and birds as well.
Survivors include, his wife, Peggy, his children, Keith, Dana (Renee), Sharon Grass (Dick), Lisa Gregory (Harry), Robert Jr. and William (Luisa), 12 grandchildren and one great granddaughter.
The family would like to extend its deepest gratitude to Glens Falls Hospital, High Peaks Hospice, and in particular to Dr. John Rugge, for the extraordinary care they gave Bob.
Friends may call from 5-7pm, Monday September, 24, at Alexander Funeral Home, 3809 Main Street Warrensburg.
A celebration of life will be conducted at 11am, Tuesday, September, 25 at St. Cecilia’s Church, 3802 Main Street, Warrensburg. A private burial will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the “Museum Fund” of the Warrensburgh Historical Society, PO Box 441 Warrensburg, NY 12885.
