Obituary of Lawrence S. Carr

Please share a memory of Lawrence to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
North Creek/Queensbury: Lawrence Spain Carr, of North Creek and Queensbury, formerly of Mahopac, passed away peacefully at home on Easter Sunday, April 21, 2019 at the age of 91, surrounded by his family. This includes his loving wife of 65 years, Patricia Regan Carr, and their four children, Laurie Scudder and her husband Charles of Columbia, MD, Maureen Britton and her husband Scott of Bellingham, MA, Lawrence S Carr, Jr and his fiancé Juanita Kettlewell of Poughquag, NY and Brendan Carr and his wife Susan of Hopewell Junction, NY. Larry was also loved by his grandchildren and their spouses – Laine, Brian, Emily, Nina, Zachary, Ashley, Michael, Tyler, Lex, Jared, Brendan, Jr., Luke, Mia, and Jenna,- and four great grandchildren – Skylar, Baylyn, Callahan, and Faye. We have no doubt he would have equally loved—and been loved by - Faye’s sibling due this fall. Born and raised in Mahopac, Larry and his twin brother Rody and his older brother Joe, chose to raise their eighteen children in Mahopac. Family was Larry’s sustaining force throughout his life. His nieces and nephews were always welcomed and loved – and returned that love. Larry was a WWII veteran, serving in the US Navy with his brother Roderick. Following the war, he and his two brothers began their college educations at Mount Saint Mary’s in Emmitsburg, Maryland. Larry graduated from Iona College with a degree in accounting. After working at Haskins and Sells, he followed his heart to teaching by pursuing a master’s degree in education from SUNY Cortland and a second master’s in math from Fordham University. A math teacher in the Mahopac public schools , Larry was the quintessential teacher. He loved teaching and was beloved by his students and colleagues. Over his 35-year tenure, he coached football, baseball, basketball, track, and volleyball. And while he never coached cheerleading, he was the school’s ultimate cheerleader, attending virtually every play, concert, sporting event, and graduation, and chaperoning more proms and field trips than can be counted. After retiring from the Mahopac schools and moving to North Creek, Larry continued to teach by tutoring in the local schools. He also volunteered at the local public library, the North Country ministry, and the Outreach Center. He functioned as treasurer of the Bluegrass Society and the North Creek Railroad museum, and volunteered at the local nursing home. He loved his home and community in North Creek. And he manifested that love by giving—never hesitating to pitch in at any organization that helped those in need. Nothing was more important to him than family. He was admired for his outsized kindness, his extreme generosity, and his unlimited compassion and empathy for all. He had a joy for living, a keen sense of humor, and a genuine interest in those around him. He lived by his personal tenets of service in the interests of all, kindness, compassion, and an all-encompassing belief that the world could and should be a better place. In his daily actions he showed us all how a life could be well lived and how to love completely. He was a remarkable man, and will be missed more than could ever be expressed here. Friends may call on Larry’s family from 12 to 4 pm, Sunday, April 28, 2019 at the Alexander Funeral Home, 3809 Main St., Warrensburg. A memorial Mass to celebrate Larry’s life will be held on Monday, April 29th 11AM at St James Catholic Church in North Creek followed by reception at Tannery Pond. The family will welcome their friends in Mahopac at Joseph J. Smith Funeral Home on Wednesday May 1st at 9 AM, followed by a 10:30 AM Mass in the chapel at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Mahopac and interment at Union Valley Cemetery. Larry loved North Creek. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to local organizations or to any organization that speaks to your heart.
