Obituary of Claire F. Sweet

Diamond Point Claire F. Sweet, 90, of Coolidge Hill road, passed away on Thursday, June 14, 2007 at her home surrounded by her loving family. Born February 19, 1917 in Ticonderoga, she was the daughter of John and Glenna (Cobb) Flemming. Claire was married to Robert (Bob) sweet February 16, 1941. They were married for 54 years before Bob’s passing in February 1994. Bob and Claire founded, owned, and operated R.J. Sweet Lumber Company in Warrensburg. They also owned and operated the Great Eastern Lumber Company and the Woodworking Plant both in North Creek. Claire continued on as chairman of the board and retired in 2002. They were also responsible for several land developments through the Adirondack area. Claire was an active member and church treasurer for the St. Sacrament Episcopal church in Bolton Landing. She was also a current member of the Holy Cross Church in Warrensburg. Mrs. Sweet sat on the board of several organizations: Boy Scouts of America, Mohican Council, and was the recipient of the Silver Fawn Award. Adirondack Girl Scouts, Salvation Army, Prospect School, and the Evergreen Bank. She was instrumental in developing the Adirondack Experience in Lake Placid. Besides her parents and husband, Claire is predeceased by her brother, Vincent Flemming. Survivors include two daughters, Laddie Toney and her husband, Jack of Warrensburg. Glenna Aldrich and her husband, Beaver of Stony Creek; One son Jack Sweet and his wife, Mary of Warrensburg; Several grandchildren and many great-grandchildren knew and loved her as “Pete”. Jill S. Toney of Coolidge Hill, Jennifer Nadler and her husband, Howard and their children Zoee and Cooper of Lake George, J. Aldrich and his wife, Fawn of Azle, Texas, Stacey Angell and her husband, Chris and their children Nathan and Masen of Queensbury, Sharine Layden and her children, John and Cassie of Saratoga, Stephanie LaFond and her husband, Paul and their children Alexandra, Paul, and Ben of Saratoga, Robert E. Sweet and his wife, Shelby and their children Alysia, Kayla, Trevor and Hailey of Warrensburg, Jacqueline McNeill and her husband, Dan and their children Ryan, Olivia, and Nolan of Lake George, John Sweet and his daughter Gwendaline of Warrensburg; several nieces and nephews. The family would like to extend a heart felt thank you to Claire’s care givers during her illness, Gloria, Pearl, Phyllis, Terry, Cathy, Val, the staff of High Peaks Hospice and Dr. Brian Smead and the staff at Hudson Headwaters Health Network. A Requiem Mass will be celebrated at 10 on Monday at the Holy Cross Episcopal Church in Warrensburg, with Bishop David Ball of the Albany Episcopal Diocese, officiating and Rev. John Cornelius, SSC and Rev. James Loughren assisting. Friends may call on Claire’s family from 3-7 p.m. Sunday, June 17 at the Alexander-Baker Funeral Home, 3809 Main St, Warrensburg. Bearers will be Robert E. Sweet, J. Walker Aldrich, John V. Sweet, Mark W. Harris, Arthur Griffenkranz, and John Marshal. The family is requesting that donations be made to one of Claire’s many charities: the Mohican council Boy Scouts of America, Adirondack Experience Lake Placid, Prospect School, Hudson Headwaters, High Peaks Hospice, Church of Saint Sacrament, The Holy Cross Church or Richards Library.
