Obituary of David A. Holland

Brant Lake:
David A. Holland, 72, affectionately known as “Bear” went to be with his Heavenly Father Monday, February 7, 2011 at Glens Falls Hospital, following a courageous battle with kidney disease.
Born August 6, 1938 in Gloversville, he was the son of the late Earl C.and Nedra (Huddleston) Holland.
David attended Indian Lake Central School, then went on to earn his GED in the United States Naval Academy. During his naval career he served on the aircraft carrier, USS Shangri-La CVA-38 as an Aviation Ordinance Man, third class. After receiving numerous certifications and specialized training in carrier weapons, loading atomic weapons, and underwater ordinance, David was honorably discharged from the Navy in 1959.
David married the love of his life, Rita Marie Frasier September 6, 1959, the couple enjoyed 51 blissful years together prior to his passing.
After fulfilling his civic duties in the armed forces, David became a Bridge Forman for the NYS Department of Transportation Bridge Maintenance. He retired after 27 years of service.
David was actively involved in serving his church as trustee and treasurer and deeply cherished his church family. Well known for his “bear hugs”, he enjoyed life to the fullest and took great pleasure in a little tale telling, the only indication being a twinkle in his eye. David had many hobbies, including hunting, fishing, gardening, travel, time spent with his friends and family, as well as being an avid reader. He will be remembered for his kindness, generosity, humor, and love for Alaska.
In addition to his parents, David was predeceased by a younger brother at birth.
David leaves behind his beloved wife, Rita; children, Dennis Holland of Pottersville; Susan Holland of Schuylerville; Scott Holland and his companion, Shelly Brean of Brant Lake; Nedra Frasier and her husband, John of Chestertown; sisters, Marvene Lawrence and her companion, David of Bakers Mills; Diane Cleveland and her husband, David of North Creek; step-sister, Susan Wendt and her husband, Walter of Marysville, WA; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Friends may call on David’s family from 6 to 9 pm, Friday, February 11, 2011 at the Thurman Baptist Church, South Johnsburg Road, Thurman.
Funeral services will be conducted 11 am, Saturday, February 12, 2011 at the Church, with Rev. Robert Herrmann, Pastor officiating.
Burial with military honors will follow in Underwood Cemetery, Brant Lake.
In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy make take the form of donations to the Thurman Baptist Church in David’s memory.
