Obituary of Phyllis E. Monroe

Johnsburg/Warrensburg: Phyllis E. Monroe, 63, of Garnet Lake Rd. and formerly of Warrensburg, passed away, Tuesday, August 30, 2011 at the Glens Falls Hospital following a brief battle with cancer. Born June 8, 1948 in Glens Falls, she was the daughter of Barbara (Fuller) Richards Hopkins of Winnabow, NC and the late Lawrence Richards. She was a lifelong resident of the area, graduating from Johnsburg Central High School. She then went on to Cosmetology School. Phyllis married Robert D. Clayton, with whom she had three children. Robert passed away in August of 2008. She married Owen R. Monroe on December 7, 1986. The couple resided on River St. in Warrensburg, where they were devoted foster parents for many years; fostering a total of 11 children and adopting six. Phyllis worked most recently through CWI, caring for the elderly. She was a longtime active member of the Warrensburg First United Methodist Church. As an excellent seamstress, Phyllis made curtains, slip covers and wedding dresses, to name a few. She enjoyed camping with her family and trips to Maine. She loved to cook and bake; her dinner rolls and Christmas cookies will be sorely missed. Besides her father, and late husband, two beloved nephews, David Monroe Jr. and Patrick Monroe have both predeceased her. Phyllis leaves behind her husband, Owen of 25 years; her children, Susan Clayton and fiancé, Bruce Bennett of Clifton Park, Erica Hayes and husband, Tim of Warrensburg and Julie Norton and companion, Josh Persons of Warrensburg, Tina Monroe of Bolton Landing, Vicki Monroe and Savannah Monroe both of Johnsburg; her former son in law, Frank Innace of Glens Falls; eight grandchildren, Kaitlyn, Lyssa and Rachael Innace, Brianna Charleston, Heidi Norton, Ryan Keith, McKynzie Pickett and Samantha Miner; her step father, Bill Hopkins; siblings, Cynthia Bennett of Queensbury, Linda Harrington and husband, Wendell of Warrensburg, Bruce Richards and wife, Cora Mae of Tupper Lake, Sherry Innace of Warrensburg, Laura Pearsall and husband, David of Warrensburg, Curtis Richards and wife, Kelly of Johnsburg; several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. A memorial service to celebrate Phyllis’ life will be conducted at 11 am, Saturday, September 17, 2011 at the Warrensburg First United Methodist Church, Main St, Warrensburg with the Rev. Stephen Andrews, Pastor officiating. A reception will follow the service at the church. At Phyllis’ request, there are no calling hours scheduled. Burial will be private and at the convenience of the family in the Bates Cemetery, Johnsburg. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to the Warrensburg First United Methodist Church or to the American Cancer Society.
